Medication Management
Medications play a pivotal role in the management of many mental health conditions, improving symptoms and response to therapy. Finding the right medication, however, isn’t easy. At Faith Integrated Psychiatry in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona, Joy Kwakuyi, DNP, PMHNP-BC, provides medication management to find the right prescription to improve your symptoms. Call the office, or schedule your in-office or telemedicine medication management appointment online today.
What is medication management?
Medication management refers to the use of prescription medications for mental health conditions. Medications improve symptoms and are used alone or in conjunction with psychotherapy.
Faith Integrated Psychiatry provides medication management. Dr. Kwakuyi is an experienced integrative psychiatric nurse practitioner who helps patients find lasting relief from their mental health symptoms and prescribes medications when appropriate.
Am I a candidate for medication management?
Dr. Kwakuyi determines if you’re a candidate for medication management after your diagnostic psychiatric evaluation. He treats many mental health conditions that benefit from psychiatric medications, including:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Bipolar disorder
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
He may recommend medication management as part of your overall treatment plan, which may include psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or Christian counseling.
What happens during medication management appointments?
The specifics of your medication management appointments at Faith Integrated Psychiatry depend on your diagnosis and the types of medications you need.
During your appointments, Dr. Kwakuyi reviews the type of medication you take and asks about your symptoms and side effects.
When starting a new medication, he may schedule frequent appointments to closely monitor symptoms and side effects, and adjust your medication as needed.
No single medication works for all, even those with the same diagnosis. It can take time for you and Dr. Kwakuyi to find the right medication and dose to improve your symptoms.
Once your symptoms are stable, Dr. Kwakuyi schedules your medication management appointments every 1 to 3 months.
When can I stop medication management?
Together, you and Dr. Kwakuyi decide when you can stop medication management. Some people may need it for only a short time, while others may need psychiatric medications their entire life.
You should never abruptly stop taking your psychiatric medication because it may cause uncomfortable symptoms such as body aches, nausea, and vomiting. It can also cause a setback in your progress.
Dr. Kwakuyi can safely wean you off your psychiatric medication to prevent uncomfortable side effects. He can also monitor your mental well-being and continue psychotherapy to help you stay on course.
