What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is a chronic mental health condition that most often appears during childhood. It’s a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means the condition is the result of changes in brain development during early childhood. It ultimately affects functioning.

Though researchers are still investigating the underlying causes of ADHD, they theorize that there’s a strong genetic link. Most people with ADHD have a relative with the disorder.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

ADHD symptoms fall into two categories: inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. People with ADHD may have more inattentive symptoms, more hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, or an equal combination of both.

Inattentive ADHD symptoms

Inattentive symptoms may include poor concentration or focus, missing important details, struggling to get assignments completed on time, or having a hard time staying organized.

People with inattentive ADHD symptoms may also have a tendency to lose things or forget to do daily activities.

Hyperactivity-impulsivity ADHD symptoms

Fidgeting, restlessness, and the need to stand or pace when expected to sit are some of the hyperactivity-impulsivity ADHD symptoms. Hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms of ADHD also include excessive talking and interrupting others.

ADHD symptoms may change over time. Children with ADHD may have more dominant hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. When they start school, they may struggle with inattention.

What can I expect during my initial ADHD consultation?

You can expect a comprehensive evaluation during your initial ADHD consultation at Faith Integrated Psychiatry. Dr. Kwakuyi first conducts a phone consultation, and then he schedules a second appointment to complete a diagnostic psychiatric evaluation, which includes life mission and spiritual assessment.

Dr. Kwakuyi sees adolescents and adults with ADHD.

What are my treatment options for ADHD?

Medication is the primary treatment for ADHD, and it includes stimulants or nonstimulants. These medications increase the brain chemicals that improve attention and focus.
